Today, Cumbria County Council's Eden Local Committee awarded £1000 to the Eden Local Agenda 21 project to improve the quality of life for Eden Communities. The project aims to involve communities in simple, cost-effective actions to improve the quality of life for local people through sustainable development. County Councillor Mary Warburton, Chair of Eden Local Committee, says,
"I am delighted to continue to support the efforts of Eden Local Agenda 21. The project was set up in April 1998 following requests from the Government for local councils to involve residents in local action to protect the environment and therefore preserve and improve the quality of life in their local area. Eden Local Agenda 21 is a partnership involving more than 230 Eden residents and organisations including both the District and County Councils. I have a great deal of respect for the organisation and its aims and this is reflected in the additional funding given today."
Kate Simpson, Eden Local Agenda 21 says,
"The project aims to raise awareness of sustainable consumption, habits and lifestyles and most importantly the simple, low-cost things people can do to make a difference to the environment. The project includes an education programme working with local schools as well as courses and events for adults. The work will include home composting, waste awareness, energy efficiency and local and organic food, farming and gardening. I am delighted that Eden Local Committee has chosen to give the project £1000 as this will enable us to maintain a network of people in Eden working towards sustainable goals through education and information."
