04/09/03 - Carlisle Road Resurfacing

Essential resurfacing work is due to start on Monday, September 8, on the A595 Wigton Road in Carlisle between Balfour Road to just west of Orton Road junction. The resurfacing work should be complete within five weeks. For the first 10 days of this work two-way traffic will be maintained using narrowed traffic lanes, which should not cause any disruption. From September 18 the junctions with Orton Road and Dunmail Drive will be closed to help maintain the traffic flow on Wigton Road. Alternative routes for motorists wanting to access Orton Road and Dunmail Drive will be signposted. Traffic lights will be in operation on Wigton Road. They will be continually monitored and manually controlled when necessary to reduce delays to a minimum.

The works will involve weekend and evening working to complete the job as soon as possible.

County Councillor John Collier, chair of Cumbria County Council's Carlisle local committee, said:

"We apologise for the inevitable disruption, which we are planning to keep to a minimum. This is the last of the major works to be carried out this year on the primary road network in Carlisle and will add to the improvements we have made all round the city."
