16/09/03 - Allerdale Local Committee to consider options for a 40mph speed limit at Bridgefoot

On Wednesday 17th September at The Oval Centre in Salterbeck at 1pm Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Allerdale will hear from Little Clifton Parish Council and local residents on the need for a 40mph speed limit in their community.

The main road through Bridgefoot, the former A66 Trunk road, is still occasionally used as a diversion route, when the new A66 trunk road is closed or congested through roadworks or road traffic accidents.

County Councillor Barbara Cannon, Chair of the Local Committee says,

"County Councillor Joe Holliday the Local Councillor for the area has been aware of local residents' and the Parish Council's concerns for some time now, as was his predecessor, Councillor Nick Findlay. They had supported previous research on the proposal.

The current danger reduction budget of £67,500 for 2003/4 is already fully committed in delivering the top four of the highest priority danger reduction schemes. The Bridgefoot proposal is one of a further 15 that did not meet the funding threshold. This year, Allerdale Local Committee has been given a much reduced highways budget and it is difficult to see when such a scheme would normally come to fruition.

Members, however, are mindful of local concerns and will consider any ways possible to take this speed reduction proposal forward."
