22/09/03 - Sculpture by world famous sculptress comes to Copeland

Today, Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Copeland agrees to fund £275 towards the  transportation and siting of the sculpture ‘Escape to Light’ near Haverigg Inshore Rescue.  The world famous sculptress Josefina de Vasconcellos created ‘Escape to Light’ and wishes to dedicate it to all Inshore Rescue Teams in the UK.  This project aims to encourage tourism as well as other economic benefits to the area.

Josefina, now in her late nineties, has some of her work in places such as St Pauls Cathedral, Hiroshima, the Berlin Wall, Stormont Castle and the North American Great Lakes.  ‘Escape to Light’ is her last large stone sculpture, weighing 7 tonnes and is approximately 3 metres long.

County Councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chair of the Local Committee says

“I am delighted that this Committee is able to help fund this project and enable the work of one of the most famous sculptress’s come to this area.  Tourism plays a large part in regeneration and providing sufficient attractions to encourage visitors to come to our area, creating future employment is so very important.  I hope that everyone, both young and old, takes time to visit the attraction.”
