On Thursday 2ndOctober at 5pm, Cumbria County Council Chairman Joe Nicholson will officially open the newly refurbished library in Workington. Councillor Nicholson will also present prizes to 4 local schoolchildren whose drawings of children’s book characters have been used to create window banners for the library.
The revamped library opened its doors for the first time on 1st September. The premises at Vulcans Lane have been transformed in the last nine months into a contemporary-look modern library, with room for people to meet or have a coffee while they browse. Besides the coffee area, there are much improved ICT facilities, including broadband Internet access, listening posts at which adults and children can listen to CDs, and a great selection of books, videos, CDs, DVDs, Play Station 2 games, talking books and CD-ROMs.
Councillor Tim Heslop, Cabinet Member with responsibility for libraries, says
“This completes the programme of refurbishing our 6 main libraries. Workington now hasan absolutely wonderful new library with all the latest technology for everyone to try. I must take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our customers who have been so patient while the refurbishment has been going on. We have already received some positive feedback from members of the public about the new image which has indicated its been worth the wait. I am sure that everyone who visits the new library will experience a welcoming atmosphere with great facilities which show that libraries are still about books but have so much more to offer besides. Anyone who has not been inside a library for a while should pop in for a coffee – seeing is believing!”
