06/04/04 - Summit greeted as a positive step forward

Cumbria County Council leader Rex Toft today (6-4-04) praised last week’s Prosperity Summit as a positive step towards addressing economic decline in Cumbria.

Councillor Toft is pledging that the county council lobbies for government, regional and local partnership support to get a better deal for Cumbria.  The county council is pushing three major initiatives:

  •       Major investment to the transport infrastructure which includes improving major roads, rail links, Carlisle airport and ports.
  •       A Morecambe Bay bridge that would harness the tital currents to generate electricity and boost the economy of south and west Cumbria through improved transport links.
  •       A university for Cumbria which would allow the county to develop its skill base with all the economic benefits this brings.

In a personal capacity, Councillor Toft also believes the county needs a new nuclear power station at Sellafield, which would address the predicted loss of thousands of jobs.

Councillor Toft added: “The government has ambitious plans to revitalise the north.  For too long Cumbria has been left out of regional investment plans with funding going to major cities like Liverpool and Manchester.  I am asking our regional partners to ensure Cumbria is not sidelined in the future.

I was pleased the North West Regional Assembly promised to consider further the proposals which came out of the conference.”
