5/8/2004 - Ferry halted

The Windermere ferry will be out of action for an evening next week to allow minor works to be carried out.

Service will cease at 6pm on Wednesday 11 August after the peak time for the day. The ferry usually runs until nearly 10pm in summer.

Remedial work will be carried out to the engine and drive shafts and the ferry is expected to be back in service for the first run at 6.50am the following morning. The work follows on from the ferry's £270,000 refit earlier this year.

Owned and operated by Cumbria County Council, the ferry is the only one of its kind in the country working in a freshwater environment and is one of the Lake District’s premier tourist attractions.
