Essential resurfacing work starts on Sunday 15 August on a stretch of the A7 and its junctions with Parkhouse Road and Kingstown Road, Carlisle.
The resurfacing, which is being carried out in two phases, should be completed within two weeks. Cumbria Highways are responsible for the £234,000 scheme. Cumbria Contract Services, the contracting arm of Cumbria Highways, will be carrying out the works.
Councillor Alan Toole, vice-chairman of Cumbria County Council's Carlisle Local Committee, said:
"Resurfacing must be done to maintain this busy gateway to Carlisle and inevitably there will be some delay and disruption, especially as it will be necessary to close the junction into Parkhouse Road for a few days.
"However, we are planning the work in such a way as to keep the traffic flowing as freely as possible. To minimise delays we are asking the contractors to work seven days a week."
The programme of work, which involves resurfacing the carriageway to a depth of 300mm, will be very intense. To complete the job as quickly as possible and to keep disruption to a minimum, Cumbria Contract Services Highways Division will be working seven days a week.
During phase one of the works, it will be necessary to close Parkhouse Road junction from the A7 Kingstown Road up to Kingstown Retail Park Junction. The closure will start at 6am on Sunday 15 August. This phase will last for about five days and will be kept to a minimum. A suitable diversion route via Kingstown Broadway will be well signed at all times.
During phase two, access from Kingstown Road on to Parkhouse Road will be open for northbound vehicles and also from Parkhouse Road on to Kingstown Road. There will be no right turn into or out of Parkhouse Junction. Traffic will be diverted via Kingstown Broadway and Greymoorhill roundabout. The diversion route will be well signed at all times.
Anyone who wants information about the progress of the works or who wants to report any problems can call the Cumbria Highways Hotline on 0845 6096609.
