15/12/2004 - County Council holiday period arrangements

Christmas may be a time to spend with friends and family but some Cumbria County Council staff will be on duty making sure that essential and emergency services are available.

Details of arrangements for individual services are as follows:

Social Services

The Social Services "Out of Hours" team will take over when offices close at 4.30pm on Christmas Eve until Wednesday, 29 December. They will take over again at 4.30pm on New Year’s Eve until Tuesday, 3 January (Editors please see separate release issued today).

Highways

The Highways Hotline is always open 24 hours a day and will remain so over Christmas and the New Year. Members of the public who need to report problems on the county's roads should call the Hotline as usual on 0845 6096609.

Over the holiday period all calls will be logged in the usual way, but only problems demanding emergency action will be dealt with immediately.

The gritting of priority roads will continue as normal over Christmas and New Year when icy conditions are expected.

Libraries

Main libraries at Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal, Penrith, Whitehaven and Workington will be closing at 1.00pm on Christmas Eve, Friday 24 December. They will open again on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 until 4pm (Saturday opening hours), and close again on New Year's Eve, Friday 31 December, until normal opening hours resume on 4 January. All Cumbria County Council branch libraries and mobile libraries will close at 1pm on Christmas Eve and resume normal service on 4 January.
