15/12/2004 - Keeping sex safe at Christmas

Today, Cumbria Teenage Pregnancy Partnership Board highlights the increased risks of unintended pregnancies over the Christmas party period.

Latest figures suggest that teenage pregnancy rates in Cumbria have levelled off, but at this festive time young people need to be aware that alcohol increases their risk of getting pregnant and of catching a sexually transmitted infection:

1. alcohol lowers inhibitions

2. alcohol affects judgement

3. being drunk often provides an excuse for behaviour that might otherwise seen unacceptable

4. people drink in contexts where it is likely they will meet potential sexual partners - e.g. parties, nightclubs

The relationship between alcohol and risk taking is complex, for adults as well as young people. However, young people seem to be more likely to engage with high impact risk taking than older people, whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Anecdotal evidence suggests alcohol is often quoted as the reason why young people do not practice safe sex, resulting in unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Fran Frankland, Cumbria Teenage Pregnancy Co-ordinator said:

"Young people say alcohol is one of the main reasons why they had unsafe sex, leading to unintended pregnancies and increased incidents of sexually transmitted infection being treated. This risk can be increased over the festive period when young people will be out celebrating, getting drunk and not staying safe. These risks are not just about sex, risks are taken with relationships, being out late at night, violence caused by alcohol and accidents from being drunk."
