21/12/2004 - Treacherous conditions warning

Cumbria County Council is urging drivers to take extra care on the roads as snow and freezing conditions are predicted for the county.

Forecasts show that many parts of the county will see some snow fall this afternoon and this evening, particularly on high ground.

As temperatures drop into the evening and night time, snow, sleet or rain will fall on freezing road surfaces leading to particularly treacherous icy conditions overnight and into the morning.

County council gritters will be out salting road surfaces, but there is a danger that rainfall could wash the salt away before freezing again.

Highways teams will be working through the night in an effort to make sure priority one and two routes are effectively treated, but special care should be taken.

Pedestrians should also take extra care as conditions underfoot could be testing.
