22/12/2004 - Christmas food parcels delivered in Cockermouth

Elderly and vulnerable people in Cockermouth will receive special Christmas food hampers on Thursday 23rd December. Cumbria Contract Services staff and meals on wheels volunteers are getting into the Christmas spirit to ensure that people receiving meals on wheels in the community get a thoroughly festive celebration treat.

The Slater Trust have donated funds so that food for the hampers can be bought and the Co-op on Station Road, Cockermouth have agreed to put them together.

County councillor Tim Heslop, cabinet spokesman for Cumbria Contract Services said:

"Meals on Wheels are provided throughout the county by Cumbria County Council’s Contract Services Premises Unit. Meals are delivered by community based volunteers and the WRVS. The meals on wheels service provides invaluable support to frail and vulnerable people in the community".

Everyone can play their part in helping frail and elderly people this Christmas by being a good neighbour and ensuring that we are aware of the needs of others, especially elderly or vulnerable people living close by."

Allison Jackson, Cumbria’s meals on wheels manager said:

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all meals on wheels volunteers and The Slater Trust for their support and continued goodwill. At this special time of year I would like to wish all our clients and volunteers a very merry and safe Christmas."

The meals on wheels service needs volunteer drivers and helpers throughout Cumbria. For more information please call:
