Cumbria County Council's local committee for Carlisle is spending £1910 to introduce a new project to encourage more young children to use the library.
The book crawl project is a scheme for children aged five and under. The aim of the project is to encourage library membership and library use by the child taking part in the project and their family. Children who read six books or more will be presented with a certificate at a special ceremony at their local library.
Chair of the local committee, councillor John Collier said:
"The county council continues to support many initiatives like this to encourage younger children to read at a very early age, to ensure they have a head start when they go to school. We are trying to get as many young children as we can to join in this scheme. It’s a fun project for the children to take part in whilst at the same time re-enforces the importance of learning. Each child will have a collectors card which will be stamped each time they read a book and return it to the library. The children will get a small gift when they have read their second, fourth and sixth book. Once they have all six stamps in their collectors card they will receive a prize and a certificate."
