9/12/2004 - Workington Library starts Sunday opening

Workington Library will see the start of its new Sunday opening arrangements at noon this Sunday, 12 December.

The extra weekend hours between midday and 4pm on Sundays will make family visits to the library easier and will feature special activities such as taster sessions on the library’s computers coming up in the New Year.

Workington is one of Cumbria County Council Library Service's six main libraries set to open their doors on Sundays.

Sunday opening also begins this weekend at Carlisle Library and has already begun at Penrith Library. Libraries at Barrow, Kendal and Whitehaven will follow suit in the coming weeks.

Roger Bingham, county council cabinet member for culture, said: "Our library service got a "good" rating from the Government inspectors this year. Sunday opening is another good example of just how well Cumbria's libraries are serving their communities and trying to reach more people by giving families the chance to visit libraries together at the weekend."

Library Services manager Alan Welton said: "We had a good public response to a pilot scheme of Sunday opening two years ago and we hope to see more people visiting all our main libraries on Sundays in the future."
