13/02/04 - Senhouse Street to be open to traffic again

Today, at a special meeting of Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Allerdale, Members agreed to let traffic flow through Senhouse Street in Maryport and look at the possibility of introducing a 20mph speed limit and other associated traffic calming measures on the Street.

In consultation with all other interested parties, the new permanent traffic regulation order will include the provision of:

  • Delivery bays;
  • Short stay car parking;
  • Disabled parking; and
  • Re-instate the bus service along the street and bus stops re-positioned where necessary

County Councillor Barbara Cannon, Chair of the Local Committee says

“The Local Committee has taken account of the force of public opinion in Maryport as demonstrated by the petition against pedestrianisation and in view of that, have today made a decision that the pedestrianisation scheme be rescinded.

The Local Committee will receive a report at a future meeting setting out how we can address how the local market can be accommodated.  The Committee is also minded to pursue traffic calming measures on Senhouse Street and surrounding areas.  All of this is subject to consultation.”
