Today, Cumbria County Council’s South Lakeland Local Committee agreed a temporary traffic order to enforce a HGV ban on the B5281 from Ulverston to Gawthwaite. The ban will be from the south end of Soutergate, Ulverston to the junction of the A595 at Gawthwaite and will control usage by vehicles over 2.2m (7’3”) in width.
County Councillor Ian Stewart, Chair of South lakes Local Committee says,
“Most people agree that the B5281 Ulverston to Gawthwaite road is not idealfor heavy goods vehicles. This Traffic Order will ensure that heavy goods vehicles use the most appropriate roads on the network even if this doesn’t mean that they travel the shortest distance. One of our key aims is to improve the safety and quality of life for local communities in South Lakeland. Preliminary consultation has led to some mixed responses on this proposal although there is local community support. This trial ban will enable us to better assess the suitability of the ban on this stretch of the road.”
Exemptions to the order include buses providing a local service and large vehicles needing access to premises or land on the restricted stretch of road.
