16/07/04 - Roose says goodbye to retiring headteacher

Today, David Fellows retires as Headteacher of Roose Community Primary School, Barrow in Furness. He has successfully served the school and community of Roose with commitment and enthusiasm for 16 years.

David became Headteacher at Roose in April 1988. He previously worked at Holm Primary School, near Carnforth, and Yarlside and Abbotsmead, Barrow. David spent a few years teaching, along side his wife Janet, in Zambia, Central Africa but has devoted almost 40 years to teaching pupils in South Cumbria. Brian Otto, Chair of Governors says,

"David Fellows is widely known and respected for his contribution to Environmental Education throughout the North. Indeed he has served in a variety of capacities on the National Committee for Environmental Education and the CAEE, and been the author or an invaluable directory of places to visit in the Northern counties."

Speaking about his retirement today David says,

"I am an active member of local history and environmental groups and look forward to spending more time involved with them. My wife, Jane and myself love travelling to exotic places around the world and we are planning to continue our travels in the future. I will miss the children and staff at Roose school but look forward to spending time on new projects."

David has strong connections with education, not only in the UK. A trip to Gambia resulting in the "adoption" of a local school, raising money to enhance the children’s education.

David and Janet will be guests at a retirement dinner at Clarence House and also a less formal occasion in school attended by parents, governors and staff who have taught with David during his time in Barrow.
