23/07/04 - New premises for Millom Community Health team

At 11.30 on Thursday 29 July, the new community mental health team office opens at No 2 Bungalow, Lapstone House, Millom. The new office is a joint venture between Cumbria County Council and North Cumbria Mental Health and Learning Disability NHS trust. It will be opened jointly by Colin Singleton, a service user and County Councillor John Mallinson, Cabinet spokesman for care and social services.

Social workers, community psychiatric nurses, day services officers and support workers will be based there. Bringing staff together is very useful to help better coordinate services but the most important development is the social and recreational facilities for service users. This enables people to get out of the house, mix with others, make new friends and reduce social isolation.

County Councillor John Mallinson, cabinet spokesman for care and social services says,

"This is a very positive move forward for the long term support of people with mental ill health in the area. We are committed to support vulnerable people and to work more effectively with other professionals in partner agencies."

Stephen Dalton, Chief Executive of North Cumbria Mental Health and Learning Disabilities NHS Trust says,

"The Trust is delighted with the development of a Community Mental Health Team base in Millom which will provide a more local and accessible range of services and help to promote increased understanding and awareness of mental health issues to the community in and around Millom.

The group activities available to service users are therapeutic and educational. The activities include water colour painting and other arts and crafts, music lessons and healthy eating programmes. Much of this work is undertaken in partnership with Cumbria County Council's Adult Education Service.
