23/07/04 - No parking permits for cocklers

Today, Cumbria County Council's South Lakeland local committee decided not to support a district council proposal to give parking permits to those involved in coastal activities. The decision was made on the basis that any parking retrictions would be impossible for the district council, as the parking enforcement agency, to operate.

County Councillor Oliver Pearson, Chair of the local committee says,

"This idea came from a scheme used sucessfully at the promenade in Morecambe. Unfortunately, the length and nature of the Furness penninsula coastline would cause serious problems in enforcement. The committee accepts that the control of the extent and nature of coastal activities must be dealt with through central government legislation. We welcome the commitment given recently by John Hutton MP to progress this legislation.
