10/06/04 - Cumbrian teacher receives special commendation

County CouncillorJoan Stocker, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education today congratulates Richard Butler for receiving a special commendation for being shortlisted for the Guardian Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School.  Richard, a Music Teacher at Ulverston Victoria High School, received his commendation at this year's Teaching Awards 2004 Ceremony for the North-East & Cumbria on Monday at Newcastle.

The Teaching Awards aim to recognise and reward the outstanding achievements of the teaching profession.  The Awards ceremony honours the success of every shortlisted nominee.  Each year Regional Winners and Special Commendees are nominated by parents, pupils, former pupils, colleagues and governors from the North East and Cumbria.

Councillor Stocker says

“I would like to congratulate Richard for this wonderful achievement.  These awards and commendations recognise the achievements of all teachers throughout the region and the commitment from all other support staff within schools.  Teachers continue to inspire young people and I am delighted that the work of a Cumbrian teacher has been recognised in this way."

Richard receives £250 for Ulverston Victoria High School.  Regional Winner will be invited to attend the Teaching Awards 2004 National Ceremony on 24th October at the Palace Theatre in London.
