22/06/04 - Christopher's balloon flies 100 miles!

12 year old Maryport boy, Christopher Humphries celebrates today after winning a balloon race. His balloon, released in March at a day organised by Cumbria County Council to celebrate the achievements of children and young people in care, was found in Scarborough.

The balloon race was the highlight of an event involving 56 children and young people `looked after’ by Cumbria County Council. Their achievements included GCSE exam success, passing their driving tests, playing in sports teams and performing in school plays and concerts. More than 100 balloons were released at the event, each one having a label with a personal achievement attached to it. Celebrating in Maryport today, Christopher says,

"We had a really nice time at the Celebration Day in March and I never dreamt that my balloon would fly the furthest. Someone in Scarborough found it - I was amazed."

County Councillor John Mallinson, cabinet spokesman for care and social services congratulated Christopher saying,

"Cumbria County Council is committed to supporting vulnerable children and their carers. I am delighted that we were able to hold this celebration of achievement. I really was amazed that Christopher's balloon ended up in Scarborough - that’s almost 100 miles!

The day was such a success the children want it to be held every year and are already planning for the next celebration."
