25/6/2004 - County Council Highways Hotline goes online

At noon on Wednesday 30 June, Cumbria County Council in partnership with Capita, launches phase two of the Highways Hotline by moving the service online.  County Councillor Kevan Wilkinson launches the online extension to the service at the Capita Regional Business Centre Kingstown, Carlisle.  The new service will go on line on Monday 5 July.

The Highways Hotline is a call centre enabling members of the public to report pot holes, gritting needs, street lighting problems and other highways maintenance issues in their local area.  When an incident has been reported, the Highways Hotline service tracks the complaint allowing the council to keep the public informed at every stage.

County Councillor Kevan Wilkinson, Cabinet spokesman for highways says,

“The new online addition to the Highways Hotline service will help Cumbria County Council and the public to work together more closely on highways matters. Although we have inspection teams it is often a member of the public who is first aware of a highway problem and it is important that we make it as easy as possible for them to report it. It will also provide us with valuable information about how the service is performing and how we can improve it.”

The highways Hotline service works by enabling the Hotline operator to answer frequently asked questions without the need to get more information from a specialist. Defects are logged from the moment they are reported to the point where they are put right. This means callers can get updated information on defects reported by themselves or others through the use of a unique reference number for each referral.

The Highways Hotline online service is available on Cumbria County Council's website.
