Today, Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Copeland agreed to continue to support the Duke of Edinburgh Award Open Centres to the tune of £9,000. The money will not only enable the current Centres is Millom, Whitehaven and Egremont to continue, but will enable others to be developed in the area.
The Initiative aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of high quality personal development for young people all over the area.
County Councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chair of the Local Committee says
"Last year, this Committee agreed to give £7,000 to develop this project because it hadn't been particularly successful in Copeland. We did this in partnership with Connexions, Young Cumbria and Allerdale & South Lakeland Local Committees. That money enabled us to target those young people who would not normally be attracted to the scheme to come forward and take part. Now over 80 youngsters are involved in the scheme from the Copeland District and this additional money will now enable even more young people enjoy this opportunity."
