25/06/04 - Services to young people remain a priority for Local Committee

Today, Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Copeland received a progress report giving details on the activities of the Neighbourhood Development Officer for Youth. For a third year, the Committee has again agreed to delegate £5k to the officer to enable him to respond to local requests and initiatives.    

During 2003/04 contributions from the Neighbourhood Development Officer (youth) budget has gone towards the following projects:   

  •  The Rotary Club - to support young person's training residential 
  •  Wheels to Work - Project publicity & advertisement for staff 
  •  Whitehaven School Special Neighbourhood Forum meeting 
  •  Pheonix Youth Club in Cleator Moor to purchase equipment 
  •  S.C Promotions - video production Distington Youth Club 
  •  Connexions - support for Whitehaven RLFC Youth Project & young single parent project  

County Councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chair of the Local Committee, says,   

"I am always delighted to support youth provision in Copeland and it just shows what can be achieved with partnership working. This Committee is committed to providing services for young people in the area and any additional money gives these young people the chance to participate in various activities, getting them to meet new people, avoiding social exclusion. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Neighbourhood Development Officer for Youth for all his hard work and dedication to make sure that we continue to meet the needs of the young people in this area."   

Requests for funding over £500 will still be referred to the Local Committee.
