28/06/04 - School Council Conference

From 10am until 4pm on Wednesday 30th June, Cumbria County Council's Education Service is hosting a School Council Conference. The Conference will be held at Solway Community School in Silloth and aims to promote race quality and diversity in secondary schools across the County.

Each school taking part in the Conference will bring up to 10 council representatives each.

County Councillor Joan Stocker, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education says

"This important issue of understanding other people’s cultural differences, particularly for young people of this county, is crucial in developing a multi-cultural and cohesive community. We need to look at how we interact with people who may be different to ourselves to avoid preconceptions and stereo-typing."

Fredrika Buchanan, Cumbria County Council's Advisory Teacher for Multicultural & Anti-Racist Education says

"This conference will enable us to raise pupil's awareness on racism and diversity within our schools. It will bring together pupils and staff from a range of social and economic backgrounds, from rural and urban areas of Cumbria. Workshops will be set up to give people the opportunity to share good practice."

For further details on the Conference please contact Fredrika on 07812 972919 or 07905 110431
