11/03/04 - Brampton Enhancement: Last Phase

The final phase of the enhancement of Brampton town centre begins next week. Resurfacing of the carriageway on Front Street and High Cross Street starts on Monday March 15 and will complete the £1/2 million scheme carried out by Carlisle Local Committee of Cumbria County Council.

County Councillor John Collier, chair of Cumbria County Council’s Carlisle Local Committee, said:

"This scheme has improved the look of the town centre, maintaining and enhancing its character, with the areas of setts being relaid and more efficient and appropriate street lighting being provided. The improved paving and road layout will ease the traffic and parking situation in Brampton and make it pleasanter and safer to get around in the town."

Up to two weeks has been allowed for the road resurfacing work, but it is expected to take less time than that. Some parts of the two streets will be closed at times to allow the work to go ahead, but traffic will be controlled to minimise delays and disruptions. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Residents and tradespeople have been told of the works.

The enhancement scheme has included:

  • Improving the pavements on High Cross Street and Front Street and around Market Place.
  • Installing better lighting in the town centre.
  • Creating two one-way streets, one at the rear of Moot Hall and the other on the Front Street  access road outside the post office.
  • Improving the car park at Union Lane and creating more on and off-street parking in the town.
  • Installing puffin crossings on Carlisle Road and Main Street.

The enhancement is one of the priority transport improvement schemes listed in the Local Transport Plan and was approved by the Carlisle local committee in February 2003.
