22/03/04 - Council's environment fund helps generate more than £4.8million for projects in Cumbria

More than 20 environmental projects in Cumbria have been given a £134,000 cash boost by the County Council’s Cabinet.

The decision will generate in excess of £4.8 million total spend for the schemes which include archaeological conservation work, ensuring the future of County woodlands and supporting the Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre.

Cabinet agreed to prioritise funding to the following areas:

  •       The three areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnerships  Solway Firth, Arnside-Silverdale and the North Pennines
  •       County wide strategic partnerships, such as the Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership, Cumbria Landscape Project, Cumbria Woodlands and the Cumbria Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG).
  •       Major countryside and coastal management partnerships capable of practical delivery: Groundwork West Cumbria, East Cumbria Countryside Project, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and the Morecambe Bay, Duddon and Solway Firth Partnerships.

Funding is also being made available to other organisations, such as Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the North West Coastal Forum.

Lawson Short, County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for the Environment, said:

“The Council’s Environment Fund is vital in ensuring the existence of a host of important environment schemes for the people of Cumbria. The £134,000 we have granted helps to draw in millions of pounds in other funding from a variety of sources.”
