26/03/04 - Local committee supports West Cumbria Society for the Blind

Today, Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Copeland agreed to allocate £5k to West Cumbria Society for the Blind to help them cover the cost of their home support service to visually impaired people living in Copeland.

The West Cumbria Society for the Blind was set up in 1990 to provide support and advice to visually impaired people in West Cumbria.  The Society has received Lottery funding in the past and continues to fund raise regularly to meet running costs.

County Councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chair of the Local Committee says

“The West Cumbria Society for the Blind provides a very valuable service to visually impaired people living in Copeland.  The Society currently supports over 700 visually impaired people in the area however RNIB statistics show that there are in fact over 3,500 visually impaired people in West Cumbria, so there is still a lot of work to be done. They provide home support, benefits advice and other support and this money will help cover the cost of providing these services.”
