30/03/04 - Mike Bell, Headteacher, The Morton School

The Governors of Morton School and Cumbria County Council have today issued the following statement regarding the resignation of Mike Bell, Headteacher of Morton School in Carlisle.

“We can confirm that for personal reasons Mike Bell has resigned from his position as Headteacher of The Morton School, Carlisle.  The governing body and the County Council’s Education Service wish him well for the future.

Heather Sargeson, currently Deputy Headteacher, will be acting Headteacher with immediate effect, supported by the school’s other Deputy Head, Jacky Kennedy.  The Education Service has total confidence in them and the whole Senior Team to provide the leadership the school needs at this time.

Cumbria County Council’s Education Service is providing additional capacity to the school to support management and leadership, both through our own officers and with additional consultancy capacity.

The teaching has recently been reviewed at the school and has been judged to be good and we have every confidence in the staff at the school, who are working hard towards securing its successful future.

The number of pupils who have so far opted for Morton as their first choice secondary school for next September is most encouraging.

The County Council and the Education Directorate in particular look forward to developing an even stronger relationship with the school and to working closely with the Governors and staff.  We wish the school and pupils well.”
