10/05/04 - Adult learners week 2004

From 15th– 21stMay, Cumbria County Council’s Library Service in Copeland is running a host of activities as part of Adult Learners Week.  During the week, members of the public will be able to take part in a number of activities in local libraries across the area.  Some of the activities include Internet taster sessions, website creation, massage and acupressure, rag rug making and many more.

The main aims of Adult Learners Weeks is to celebrate the achievements of all adult learners, promote participation in learning and increase access to information, advice and guidance.

County Councillor Joan Stocker, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education says

“Most of us say those famous words ‘I’d love to be able to do’ or ‘if only I could’.  Adult Learners week gives people the opportunity to try something new or just brush up on old skills. The week is also about recognising the achievements of all the people who’ve done just that.  You are never too old to learn and learning doesn’t have to be about getting a qualification or studying full-time. There’s plenty of satisfaction to be had from just getting to grips with something new and proving to yourself that you can do it.  Cumbria County Council is committed to increase the educational standards and skills levels for people in this County and that doesn’t just mean people of school age.  I hope people take this opportunity to go down to their local library and take part in one or two of the activities being provided.”
