11/05/04 - Facelift for Barrow Island library

Cumbria County Council’s Barrow Island Library is undergoing external refurbishment this month. It means the library will close for two weeks from Monday May 17 to allow the work to go ahead. At the same time staff are taking the opportunity to improve some areas of the library.

Councillor Tim Heslop, county council Cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said:

“The refurbishment will give Barrow Island Library a more welcoming exterior and allows the library service the chance to make some changes inside for the benefit of users. There will be some inconvenience, but we hope people will be understanding.”

Fines will be waived while the Barrow Island library at 19 Ramsden Dock Road is closed. The next nearest branch is the main Barrow library at Ramsden Square, for those who can get there.

The work at Barrow Island will include replacing windows and window frames and external painting.  Inside, defective wall plastering will be renewed and the interior upgraded, with some furniture replaced.

An official re-opening day will be announced at a future date. It will be celebrated with Barrow Island library's annual coffee morning.
