18/05/04 - Sporting heroes at Nelson Thomlinson School in Wigton

Cumbria County Council Chairman, Joe Nicholson, today congratulated Nelson Thomlinson School’s Under 13’s football team for winning the Northern Final of the Coca Cola English Schools Under 13 Trophy at Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough on 3rdMay.  Nelson Thomlinson beat Southmoor School in Sunderland in front of 200 supporters.  The match finished 1 - 0.

Over 2000 teams take part in the competition nationally.  The Team will now play Rushcliffe School, Nottingham in the Nationalsemi-final on 19thMay at Watford’s stadium.

“This is a wonderful achievement for these young footballers.  I would like to congratulate everyone involved and wish them the very best of luck for the 19th.”

“This school has had an enormous amount of sporting successes over the years.  Many of our students have played for England in various sports.  This has been one of our best achievements ever.  Out of 2200 teams in the nation’s most popular sport we are down to the last four.  I am extremely proud of each and every one of them.  They are all ambassadors for the school.”

Play-Offs and Final will be held at Chelsea’s ground on 20th May.
