20/05/04 - Grant aid will help promote planned eco-centre

A state of the art eco centre is now a step nearer thanks to a grant from Cumbria County Council.

The Council’s Local Agenda 21 Fund has made a grant of £2,000 to the Cockermouth Community Eco-Centre which will be a thought provoking contemporary building, constructed using sustainable technologies and materials.

A planning application for the centre has been prepared and is being considered by the local authority. If approved, construction work will begin in August.

Lawson Short, County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for environmental issues, said:

"The building will use recycled materials and be powered by renewable energy and its design is the outcome of widespread community consultation. The project recently received a large grant from the Department of Education and Skills and the money we are providing will be used for publicity materials to promote the venture to other schools and organisations in the area, as well as to twinned schools across the globe.

"The Eco Centre is being managed by Cockermouth School but it will be a valuable resource for the wider local community."
