20/05/04 - Jim Webster appointed as new Chairman

Today at Cumbria County Council's Annual General Meeting, County Councillor Jim Webster was appointed Chairman for the coming year. County Councillor Anne Parker was appointed as Vice-chair.

Jim Webster was a member of the County Council from 1985 to 1993 and joined the Council again in 1997. He has chaired the Individual Support Consultative Forum, the Pensions Committee and was last year's Vice Chairman of the Council. He also chaired the Agricultural Training Board in Furness, training and retraining farmers and farm workers. Councillor Webster says,

"It is a great honour to be elected Chairman of Cumbria County Council. I am looking forward to promoting the County Council both inside and outside the County. Cumbria County is committed to putting the public first and delivering quality services."

County Councillor Anne Parker was appointed to the Council in 1997 representing the Lakes division. She was a member of the Lake District National Park Authority from 2001 to 2003, Chaired South Lakes Local Committee from 2002 to 2003 and is currently the Chair of the Member's Children's Forum, dealing with issues relating to children and young people in care. Commenting on her appointment, Anne says,

"I worked as a paediatric nurse and later as a middle-manager in a large teaching hospital before retiring and becoming involved in politics. My specific political interest in services for vulnerable children and adults is fairly predictable. I enjoy the satisfaction of improving services for people in Cumbria. My proudest moments include working with the community and other partners to provide 7 new local occupancy houses in Langdale, conversion of Ambleside bedsit accommodation into very sheltered housing and the provision of a nursing home in Windermere. I look forward to representing the Council and working for the people of Cumbria in the year ahead."
