24/05/04 - Cumbrian teacher nominated for Teaching Award

On Monday 7th June, Richard Butler, a Music teacher at Ulverston Victoria High School, will attend this year's Teaching Awards 2004 Ceremony for the North-East & Cumbria. Richard is nominated for the Guardian Award - Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School. The Awards ceremony will be held at Newcastle Racecourse.

The Teaching Awards aim to recognise and reward the outstanding achievements of the teaching profession. The Awards ceremony will honour the success of every shortlisted nominee and the winners of each award category will be announced at the event. Each year school communities from across the Country, and members of the public, are asked to nominate their most outstanding headteachers, teachers and teaching assistants for a Teaching Award.

After being nominated, awards panels shortlisted nominees from the thousands of entries received. Panel Members then visited shortlisted nominees in their schools to observe them in their classrooms and to meet representatives from the whole school community.

County Councillor Joan Stocker, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education says

"This is a wonderful achievement. Teachers inspire young people and I am delighted the work of a Cumbrian teacher has been recognised in this way."

Richard Butler is looking forward to the Awards Ceremony. He says

"I was very surprised to be nominated for the award, and it is a great honour to be shortlisted from so many nominees. I feel that most of the success of music at UVHS, and as a result my success, is due to the great commitment, enthusiasm and dedication of the students who I teach, the hard graft of the music staff around me and the support from staff throughout the school for what we are trying to achieve within my Faculty and the Music Department itself. I expect the Awards Ceremony to be both a humbling experience and a time of celebration, recognising the achievements of all teachers throughout our region and, personally, the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm of all the staff and students at Ulverston Victoria High School.
