25/05/04 - More help to set up your own out of school club

Cumbria Sure Start is delighted to be able to offer financial support to anyone thinking about setting up their own out of school club in their community. Cumbria Sure Start Out of School Funding is available for new or existing groups wishing to develop new out of school places. The grant covers all start up costs and is available for twelve months or up to three years in areas of disadvantage.

If there is a demand for an out of school club in your area why not get together with other parents and carers to organise your own facilities. Here’s a checklist of many of things you will need to do if you’re setting up a new club:

  •  Think about the idea!
  •  Make contact with others
  •  Set up a steering group
  •  Research local need, consult with local childcare providers
  •  Design the club (who, what, where, when)
  •  Develop a business plan
  •  Develop policies & procedures
  •  Investigate your legal responsibilities including registration with Ofsted
  •  Form a legal management structure
  •    Apply for funding
  •  Employ suitably qualified and experienced staff
  •  Develop a range of suitable activities
  •  Publicise your facility
  •  Open the doors!

All out of school clubs must register and be inspected by the Office for Standards in Education – Ofsted – if they run for two hours or more per day for more than five days a year.
