25/05/04 - St James' Fun Club to stay open throughout the summer break

Cumbria Sure Start is delighted that St James’ Fun Club in Whitehaven will be open to provide childcare facilities to families throughout this summer’s six week school holidays. Coalfields Regeneration Project has provided the Fun Club with £5k which will go towards the opening of the Club during this important time.

St James’ Fun Club was set up several years ago, following the success of the before and after school club at St James. Independent of the school, the Holiday Fun Club attracts two-thirds of its children from outside St James School and provides childcare for 4 -11 years olds from 8am until 5pm weekdays throughout the school holidays.

County Councillor Joan Stocker, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education says

" As well as providing this secure and stimulating environment, this Club provides childcare that is affordable for parents. Children attend out of school clubs for many reasons, their parents may be at work or college, or they may just go for fun. Cumbria Sure Start works extremely hard with childcare providers across the County to ensure that we continue to improve the quality, quantity and flexibility of childcare in Cumbria."

Nick Troughton, a member of the parent’s organising committee explains

"The Fun Club was a spin off from the before and after school club. We use the same premises - the church hall next to the school - but it is not just for the kids from St James.  Many children come from the surrounding area. The Fun Club was originally set up by parents and those who run it are all parents. We wanted to make a safe, fun place for children to go. And when you have happy kids you give parents peace of mind. We go on trips to local attractions as well as organise for people to come into the Club. We have had circus training and magicians here in past holidays. The club is largely used by children whose parents work, but other come just to enjoy themselves. We do many activities such as crafts and games. We keep them busy and occupied and they enjoy it."
