Cumbria County Council and family baker Warburtons have joined forces in a new road safety campaign 'use your loaf - think road safety'. Chairman of the council's local committee for Carlisle, John Collier, and Dave Graham from Warburtons will present reception class children at Newtown Primary School with road safety role play packs, supplied by the baker. The presentation will be at the school on Friday 5 November at 11.30am. The school's own school crosser, Linda Hargreaves, will also be there.
Warburtons have supplied 30 primary school reception classes across the county with the packs which contain school crossing patrol uniform, a school crossing patrol 'lollipop', stop sign and a zebra crossing.
County Councillor John Collier said
"Last year over 300 children were injured on Cumbria's roads and the county council is working hard to reduce that figure. These packs aim to help these children to understand how to use the road safely. Road accidents are one of the major risks to children growing up in Britain and one of the council's key aims is to improve the safety and quality of people’s lives, particularly on the roads. I would like to thank Warburtons for becoming involved in the campaign and supplying these packs."
Dave Graham, who is based at Warburtons depot in Carlisle, said:
"Health and safety are very important at both work and school and though the 'use your loaf' campaign we hope to make young children aware of the importance of school crossing patrols."
The 'use your loaf' presentations are being made in the week before Road Safety Week (8 - 14 November) which is organised by the road safety charity Brake which aims to prevent road crashes through education.
