18/10/2004 - Over £10k to four community groups across the Carlisle area
Today, Cumbria County Council’s local committee for Carlisle approved over £10k of neighbourhood forum funding to four community groups across the area.
The community grants, given by neighbourhood forums, are to support local community activities and projects. Chairman of the local committee, councillor John Collier said:
"The County Council is committed to supporting the economic, environmental and social well being of the people of Carlisle and surrounding areas. Community grants are a primary source of social support and help to ensure social inclusion and community participation. All four of these projects are very worthwhile and will benefit many people in the local area."
The projects supported are:
Longtown Community Centre - £4,350 towards the cost of youth workers wages. The youth workers employed deliver a combination of face to face work, project planning, leisure activities and health education to as many 13-19 year olds in the area.
The Elim Community Church - £1,012.39 towards equipment for the weekly drop-in sessions at Morton Community Church for the young people in that area. This includes play station and games, DVD player, portable TV, air hockey game and snooker table. This dop in centre enables youngsters to access a safe environment where they are able to meet up with friends each week.
St Aidan's Youth Project - £3,559 towards the cost of youth workers wages. Youth workers in the area aim to increase the contact they have with 13-19 year olds in the area.
Greystone After School Club - £1,945.55 towards staff salaries. This project attracts 25 children aged between five to eight years old. It is a popular childcare facilitiy meeting the needs of parents in the area.
