25/10/2004 - Safe drivers do battle

Ten finalists in a competition to find the safest driver in Cumbria will do battle at a special event at 1pm on Wednesday, 27 October, at Cumbria Constabulary's Northern Traffic unit at Houghton, near Carlisle.

Cumbria County Council is staging the final of the Safe Driving competition with the police and other partners from the Safer Roads for Cumbria initiaitive set up to reduce the number of deaths and serious injury accident on the county's roads. The competition is part of the The "It Wouldn't Kill You" campaign.

The ten competitors will fight it out over a series of safe driving exercises judged by experts from the British School of Motoring.

The winner will be crowned 'Safest Driver in Cumbria' and receive a skidpan driving experience as a prize.

The ten finalists are the top scorers from the first stage of the competition which involved completing a safe driving survey either on-line or at a special launch earlier this month.

Kevan Wilkinson, county council cabinet spokesman for transport, will be on hand to present the award on Wednesday afternoon. He said:

"Too many people are being hurt and killed on Cumbria's roads. Cumbria County Council is working with the police and other bodies to save lives with the "It Wouldn't Kill You" campaign. This safe driving competition is a fun and interesting way to get the safe driving message across and there’s a great prize."
