27/10/2004 - County steps in to save bus services to Dacre Road

The 185 bus will be diverted to serve people living in the Dacre Road area of Brampton after Cumbria County Council stepped in with funding following the withdrawal of the number 85 service.

In September bus operator Stagecoach announced it wanted to stop running the 85 service it introduced in 2002 to serve people in the Dacre Road estate area of Brampton. Combined with the 685 service it provided a half-hourly service between Brampton and Carlisle, but Stagecoach said too few people were using the number 85 and the service was not commercially viable and would be withdrawn from 31 October.

Brampton Parish Council raised a petition against the withdrawal of the service and 72 local residents wrote letters if objection.

Cumbria County Council has now arranged for the council-supported 185 service to be diverted to offer six return journeys a day between Brampton and Dacre Road and three return trips from Dacre Road to Carlisle.  A further three daily return trips to Carlisle will be possible by changing in Brampton for the 685.

The 185 service is supported by Cumbria County Council and Northumberland County Council. Cumbria will pay for the whole of the Dacre Road extension to the route.
