11/4/2005 - British Horse Society award for county

The British Horse Society (BHS) are to present Cumbria County Council and Capita Symonds with their “Good Guys” Safety award.

The award recognises the important contribution that Cumbria has made to equine road safety over the years at both local and national level.   In addition to supporting BHS campaigns and running competitions, exhibitions and safety awareness evenings, the road safety unit has continued to assist the BHS with their riding and road safety training and testing programme.

The County’s Senior Road Safety Officer, David Kerry, holds two voluntary posts with the BHS, namely Assistant County Safety Representative and Safety Representative for the North of England.   David sits on the BHS national Safety Advisory Committee where he acts as representative for the Local Authority Road Safety Officers Association – effectively representing road safety officers throughout the UK.

Mr Kerry said:

"There are approximately eight horse related accidents every day and on average five riders are killed each year in the UK.   Cumbria makes a unique contirbution to road safety in an attempt to reduce this figure through training and educating riders how to stay safe on the counties roads.   We are delighted to accept this award and will keep up the good work".

Sheila Hardy, BHS Senior Executive (Safety), will make the presentation to representatives of both Cumbria County Council and Capita Symonds.   The event will take place at Blackdyke Riding and Competition Centre, Blackford Carlisle at 9.30am on Wednesday 13th April 2005.
