Cumbria County Council's library service is providing free internet access to help students study in the run up to their exams. Schools are also making their facilities available out of hours and putting on special revision sessions for students.
Research shows that web based revision is growing and can have a positive impact on achievement. Year 11 students have already been given the county council's internet revision guide of useful websites. The guide has been produced by the Cumbria 14 - 19 Pathfinder as part of their work to promote elearning in the county. All sites highlighted are free to anyone with an internet connection.
Irene Krechowiecka of Cumbria Pathfinder said:
"There are so many sites on the web designed to help students studying for exams, however some aren't as effective as others. This guide will help students access the best sites. Research shows that students using elearning to prepare for exams achieved 4.5% more 5+A*-C GCSE's than expected based on prior attainment. I am delighted that the county council's library service have agreed to provide free internet access to make sure all students can benefit from web based revision."
Main libraries are now open from 12pm - 4pm every Sunday which will allow students who don't have internet access at home study at weekends. Broadband is available on all library PC's and PC access can be booked in advance. Feedback forms will be available in libraries for students to complete. Each completed form will be entered into a prize draw to win an MP3 player.
