21/4/2005 - More than 60 motorists caught under the influence

More than 60 people failed breath tests on Cumbria's roads last month.

A total of 1,042 drivers were breath tested as part of Operation Abolish, Cumbria Constabulary's ongoing crackdown on drivers abusing drink and drugs.

Results for March show that:

In North Cumbria there were 294 tests with 28 positive results and one refusal.

In West Cumbria there were 114 tests with eight positive results.

In South Cumbria there were 634 tests with 29 positive results, one refusal and one unable to give a sample for medical reasons. Two people were also arrested for driving while unfit because of drugs.

The figures show that too many people in the county continue to risk their own lives and the lives of others by driving under the influence of drink and drugs.

Fifty eight people were killed and 374 were seriously injured on Cumbria's roads in 2004.

Alcohol played a role in around half of the fatal accidents in the south of the county last year and is known to have been significant factor in fatal accidents across the rest of the county.

Inspector Nick Coughlan of Cumbria Constabulary said: "It is madness to get behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs. There are still too many people apparently prepared to put themselves and others in terrible danger by doing so. Operation abolish is aimed at those people reckless enough to hit the road after using drink or drugs. Last month alone we caught more than 60 people. Hopefully this will be a deterrent to anyone stupid enough to take a similar chance."
