A new bus serving Ulvertson's Stanley Street health centre will start on Monday, 9th May, thanks to £10,000 of funding from Cumbria County Council's local committee for South Lakeland.
Committee members agreed to find the funding for a trial bus service to and from the health centre. The timetable for the number 70 Ulverston Town Link service has been designed to coincide with opening times at the GP surgeries which have relocated to Stanley Street.
The £10,000 from the local committee will fund the trial service for six months - during that period the bus will need to attract enough passengers to make it commercially viable in the future, or attract extra funding from other sources to maintain it.
The weekday service, operated by Stagecoach, has been designed to serve as many residential areas as possible including Rydal Road, Well Lane, Oakwood Drive, Urswick Road, Victoria Road and Neville Street.
Special leaflets with more details of the route and timetable will soon be available at GP surgeries, Ulverston Library, Ulverston Tourist Information Centre and County Council offices on Cross Street.
Fares will be 85p for a single and £1.45 for a return ticket and concessionary half-price fares are available for senior citizens.
Dianne Whitehead, neighbourhood development officer for Ulverston, said: "This is a brand new service for the town. We've tried to make the route and the timetable as user-friendly as possible. What we need now to keep it running is for of the people of Ulverston to make good use of it."
