Cumbria County Council's Trading Standards officers are warning the public to be wary of businesses that visit homes trying to sell security equipment.
Phil Ashcroft, Head of Trading Standards said: "We have had a spate of complaints from elderly residents who have been contacted by a company selling fire and security equipment. They have had to endure a long, high-pressure, and at times alarmist sales pitch in their home. The equipment that they sell is grossly overpriced. My advice is not to let these people into your house".
The sales tactics vary. Sometimes the householder will receive a call from the company saying that they are in the area and that they will carry out a security survey. Sometimes the representative will turn up on the doorstep unannounced.
Trading Standards advice is clear. Do not do business with cold callers. If you need security advice, contact the Police or Fire and Rescue service for free independent advice.
