30/8/2005 - Youngsters taught the skills to drive

Young people will be taught the valuable skills needed to pass a driving test and become a responsible road user in an effort to make new drivers safe on the roads.

Young Cumbria are holding a one day event at Castle Street Centre in Kendal on Thursday 1st September between 10.00am and 4.00pm where anyone aged between 15 and 17 are welcome to attend free of charge to brush up on their pre-driving skills.

Between 1st August 2004 and 31st July this year, at least one driver between the ages of 16 and 25 were involved in 22 fatal collisions (48 per cent of all those recorded) and 101 serious injury accidents (33 per cent of all serious injury collisions).

Lyn Williams, project organiser from Young Cumbria said:

"Too many young people are being involved in road accidents on Cumbria's roads.   Young Cumbria has set up workshops to encourage youngsters to come along and improve their driving skills.   The day will provide new drivers with all they need to know about becoming a driver, from the cost of driving to taking the test to becoming safe and responsible on the roads."

The workshop also includes talks from the Fire Service, Driving Instructors and the Police.
