At their meeting today Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Copeland approved funding totalling £11,000 for Community Groups in the area.
3 separate organisations in Copeland will now receive a welcome boost from grants of £5000 or £3000. The “Wheels to Work” project was granted £5000; the Millom and Haverigg Economic Development Group £3000; and the Copeland Citizen’s Advice Bureau £3000.
The Wheels to Work (W2W) project is run by Connexions Cumbria and provides transport to help young people who live or work in rural areas commute to and from work. This enables them to gain and maintain employment, which would otherwise prove impossible. W2W provides mopeds, protective clothing and helmets on six month loans for people between 16 and 20. The project today successfully applied for £5000 to fund two further mopeds for young people in the Copeland area.
The Millom and Haverigg Development Group received a £3000 contribution towards the cost of providing extra lighting for the streets surrounding the library in St Georges Road, Millom. The extra lighting is part of the Development Group’s efforts to drive down vandalism in the area around the library - a bid supported by the police and the Crime and Disorder Partnership.
Copeland Citizens Advice Bureau will receive £3000 to complete their funding package to support an advisor working with people recovering from mental ill health on the Yewdale and Buttermere Wards at West Cumberland Hospital.
County Councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chair of Copeland Local Committee said:
"It can be very difficult for groups to secure funding, even on a fairly small scale, for projects that can often make a real difference in the local community, so we are very proud of the support we are able to give.
These grants will provide a real boost for a range of organisations and will be a contribution to many worthwhile causes. The county council is committed to improving services and facilities for everyone in Cumbria, and this local committee is very proud to be able to support so many groups who are working towards the same goal in Copleland."
These grants come in the same week as Egremont and District Swimming Pool Trust formally received the £15,000 funding approved by Copeland Local Committee earlier in the year. The trust took on the swimming pool in 2003 and have received £15,000 in funding every year since from the Copeland Local Committee to support this valuable community facility.
