18/2/2005 - Kick off for new sports coaching scheme

Cumbria Sport has teamed up with the six local authorities, School Sport Network and National Governing Bodies to bring over £300k Government funding to Cumbria to go towards the Community Sports Coaches Scheme.

The scheme will provide paid, professional and qualified coaches to work locally to increase the number and range of quality coaching opportunities available to all young people across the county.

Each community sports coach will be employed by Cumbria County Council. They will work as part of a team across a range of clubs, schools and other community sport providers across the area.

County councillor Joan Stocker, cabinet member for education said:

"It's great that the young people of Cumbria will get expert coaching in the schools and clubs within their local area. The county council is always looking for new ways to encourage active, healthy lifestyles. This is a good example of how partnership working can bring extra funding to benefit this county."

Eddie Edge, Cumbria Sport and Partnership Manager for Cumbria County Council said:

"This is a great opportunity for young people who are enthusiastic and have an interest in sport to use those skills to make a real difference to the way sport is delivered to the young people in this county. The county council will employ each community sports coach however they will be managed by a group of local authority, specialist sports college and national governing body personnel."
