Primary school kids attending schools that receive meals from Cumbria Contract Services have a treat in store on Friday 25th February.
The one day event will allow pupils to have a special themed lunch with
Chelsea’ Caribbean Curry, ‘Very’ Vegetable Rice, Tropical 5 Fruit Salad
Every pupil eating the special lunch will also receive a promotional sticker.
County councillor Tim Heslop, cabinet spokesman for Cumbria Contract Services said:
"Schools and parents have a real battle on their hands to combat the pressure from TV adverts tempting children to eat unhealthy foods. Most adverts on children’s TV are for fatty, sugary or salty foods. Supermarkets have also been singled out for tempting children at checkouts. The government is encouraging youngsters to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Cumbria Contract Services provides school meals to schools throughout the county on behalf of the county council and we are always looking for fun ways to get an important message across. I am sure the pupils will enjoy their special lunches and if they continue to eat the right amount of fruit and veg then in time this will have a big impact on their achievements I'm sure."
Head of Cumbria Contract Services Premises, Sue Castle Clarke said:
"All our school foodservice menus are designed to comply with national nutritional standards, while being appetising and delicious for the county’s youngsters "Fruity Friday" will encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables and reinforce our underlying message about eating well and feeling good."
